German tanks: a general view

German tanks in general are sniper tanks. They generally have good frontal armor and accurate, rapid-fire guns with high penetration. Most German tanks focus on thick armor and sacrifice mobility. The task of most tanks of this nation is to conduct combat at medium and long distances. The main skill for a pilot of such a tank is to be able to position his tank correctly, i.e. do this in such a way that enemy shots ricochet more often and cannot penetrate the armor - place the tank at an angle and hide it behind various obstacles. The exception is high-rank light tanks - they lose armor for speed.

Now let's move on to a more detailed review of German tanks.

Light tanks of Germany

Relatively thick armor and high maneuverability (but low speed) allow German light tanks to quickly position themselves on the battlefield and shoot enemies at medium range. The first tank of this nation, the light tank Leichttraktor, copes with these tasks perfectly - an accurate weapon with a high level of penetration allows it to shoot enemies even from a high distance without much difficulty, and a good supply of health allows it to fight at short distances. Its main problem is its size - it is very easy to hit. At the same time, the low speed of this tank will not allow it to break away from faster rivals (for example, MS-1). After it, German light tanks are divided into two variations - Pz.Kpfw. 35 and Pz.Kpfw. II. The differences between the 35th and II are that the 35th has almost cardboard armor, but is very mobile and fires high caliber (40mm) shells with a high level of penetration, while the II is a more versatile tank, with good armor and a high rate of fire coupled with high accuracy and pointing speed. At the same time, it is much less mobile and copes very poorly with uphill driving. Subsequently, the 35th turns into the 38th, differing from the 35th only in its greatly reduced weight (+ speed, - armor), but its next version, Pz.Kpfw. 38 n.A., with the same properties, it also has a small size, making the tank a difficult target. Later this branch becomes the Pz.Kpfw. IV, a medium tank, which I will talk about in the corresponding section. Model Pz.Kpfw. II, meanwhile, goes into Pz.Kpwf. III Ausf. G, a lightweight version, lacking strong armor and high precision guns, but possessing a powerful caliber and high rate of fire, coupled with high speed and maneuverability. This is an excellent light German tank for close contacts with the enemy and reconnaissance. Later, two types of medium tanks and one heavy tank “grow” from it (at the fourth rank!). Also II can turn into variant II Ausf. G is a fast and light reconnaissance tank with high visibility and fast-firing guns. The next one after it, II Luchs, has the highest speed, but low maneuverability, and also has stronger armor. A really significant difference in this development is brought by the light tank VK 16.02 Leopard - it is just as fast, but has much denser armor and higher caliber guns (39mm). The next after it, VK 28.01, only strengthens the established trend - the highest speed of 72 km/h and the most powerful high-caliber projectiles make it a powerful contender. The only downside to the situation is the high reload time. Germany's final light tanks, Spahpanze SP I C and Spahpanzer Ru 251, are more similar to tank destroyers from other countries - they are small, mobile, shoot far and hurt, but have virtually no armor. A separate positive quality of the Ru 251 is the ability to use explosive shells with a caliber of 100mm - this allows you to penetrate even some medium tanks and inflict huge damage on them from the inside.

German medium tanks

Germany's first medium tank is the third-rank Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf A - a small, mobile tank with an accurate high-caliber gun (75mm). Its disadvantage is its relatively weak hull armor. Another variant of the German medium tank is the Pz.Kpfw.III - a tank with average parameters in almost everything, which does not have any pronounced disadvantages. Its good weapon, thick frontal armor and sufficient speed allow it to perform almost any function on the battlefield, but it is more difficult to destroy heavy enemies alone. Tank IV Ausf. A later changes to IV Ausf. D, which differs from its predecessor primarily in the caliber of the gun, and then there is a transition to IV, a mobile tank with good frontal armor, which is distinguished by its very large dimensions, especially compared to its predecessors. The next one after it, VK 30.01 (P), does not get smaller - but it becomes stronger and more accurate, and is also equipped with an 88mm caliber gun. It doesn't have good mobility and gets stuck on uneven terrain, but it can accelerate well in a straight line. Later it “evolves” into Tiger (P), a good heavy tank. Tank III, mentioned earlier, is developing in a slightly different direction - the next after it III/IV also remains a good-at-everything, but not-ideal-at-anything tank with good armor, excellent mobility and high penetration, suffering from low rate of fire. The main difference between the next tank, the VK 30.01 (D), is only its enormous weight and high health reserves, but the rest of the characteristics are very similar. But this tank again divides the further development of German medium tanks in two - the Panther I and VK 30.02 (D). The Panther is a heavy (by weight) tank with powerful curved frontal armor and extremely accurate, although not the most powerful, weapons. It is more difficult to control and quite large, but otherwise it is an excellent German medium tank. 30.02 (D) is significantly different - it is faster and has very curved armor, which allows it to avoid many shots, but its armor is thinner and a precise hit does more damage to it. He himself, in turn, has a rich arsenal of accurate and powerful weapons. “Panther” then turns into its second version, Panther II, and becomes even better - speed and controllability increase, the weapon becomes more powerful and fires faster. The picture is clouded only by the weak armor of the lower part of the hull. VK 30.02 (D) when upgraded becomes the Indien-Panzer, a small tank with good mobility, good armor, high rate of fire and excellent penetration. Its problems are that it takes a long time to accelerate and aim - but this does not prevent it from being used in mid-range battles. The Panther II then progresses into the E50, a large tank with very thick armor, excellent speed and high weight, capable of destroying enemies with a ram. Its next form looks more interesting - E50 Ausf. M: A relatively slow but quite durable tank with a great gun that can shoot as far as you like, quickly aim to penetrate any target, and deal massive damage. Its disadvantage is the relatively unprotected lower part of the case. Returning to the Indian-Panzer, we should say about the famous “Leopards” that followed it - Leopard Prototyp A and Leopard 1. Their essence is that they have practically paper armor, but at the same time excellent speed and maneuverability are combined with powerful, accurate guns, and small size allows you to evade enemy attacks.

Heavy tanks of Germany

The Reich's heavy tanks are really heavy. All of them are extremely slow (excluding Tiger), but at the same time they have thick armor and large-caliber weapons. Their armor is almost always flat, which is why these tanks are called “boxes”. From Durchbruchswagen 2 to Maus, they all specialize in dealing massive damage to the enemy and containing the damage. The aforementioned rank four Dbw2, for example, has extremely thick armor on all sides and shoots well, but the lack of armor slope makes it a relatively easy target for tanks with high penetration guns. For comparison, the aforementioned Maus of the tenth rank also has flat, but extremely thick armor, the largest reserve of “health” in the game, high-precision weapons and enormous mass, and at the same time it moves slowly. This description applies to almost any German heavy tank, and they are, perhaps, qualitatively less different from each other than any other tanks within the same class (unlike the German medium tanks described above). An exception to this rule is the famous Tiger - the original “Tiger” does not have heavy armor, but develops good speed and very accurately fires 88-caliber shells. Its variation from Porsche - Tiger (P) - differs from it in reduced speed, but thick frontal armor, and the second version of the Tiger, Tiger II, combines thick armor and high speed, and also gains the ability to quickly turn in one place.

German tank destroyer

The first German tank destroyer can be obtained very early - already at the second rank, immediately after the Leichttraktor light tank. The first tank destroyer is called Panzerjager I and in essence it lays the foundation for almost all subsequent tank destroyers in Germany - it is a small vehicle with an accurate gun, capable of shooting at enemies from afar and inflicting quite a lot of damage. The only problem is that the Panzerjager I has virtually no armor, so you will always have to hide - shoot from afar, use bushes and cover. The next one after it, Marder II, focuses less on shooting accuracy and more on damage - being less accurate and not as mobile, Marder II is even smaller in size and must choose a good position, spend time aiming and deliver a powerful blow. A further German tank destroyer is the Hetzer - a tank destroyer well armored at the front due to the curves of the armor, capable of quickly aiming and firing from a variety of guns - both powerful and rapid-fire. The problem with Hetzer is its low mobility and weak side armor - so it is logical to use it in ambushes and try to take a position in which it will not be visible, and try not to move. Next in the German tank destroyer branch is the StuG III Ausf. G, which is characterized by high speed and maneuverability, good rate of fire and high lethality. The disadvantages are thin armor and poor “vision” - this tank is difficult to control without a trained team and improved optics. The Jagdpanzer IV, which comes after it, does not boast high penetration, but it is very low and quite fast, and also has a fairly high rate of fire - to play effectively, you will need to actively move out of sight of the enemy and target their sides and rear parts. Next in the tank destroyer branch is the Jagdpanther, a fast tank with very good weapons, capable of shooting quickly, aiming accurately and dealing good damage. Its downside is that it is fairly easy to spot, and its armor lacks bulges, so the only way to keep it safe is to properly position it at an angle to the enemy so that enemy projectiles ricochet off the curved armor. After this, the tank destroyer development branch suddenly splits in two and allows you to choose between Jagdpanther II and Ferdinand. The second version of the Jagdpanther is much faster and its upper front part has very thick armor - but if you shoot this car from the side, its thin high walls will most likely not withstand and will be easily penetrated. Ferdinand, on the contrary, is slow, but armored on almost all sides and has a good gun (the same one that is on the Maus). The problem is that, despite its low maneuverability, it is large, and its armor, although thick, is flat - it is not difficult to aim at such a tank. The Jagdtiger, next to both models, is a very specialized tank destroyer - it doesn't have much armor and doesn't move particularly fast, and its vision range isn't that great, but it does deal massive damage to anyone in front of it. It shoots quite quickly and deals a lot of damage per shot - the main thing is not to let the enemy get around you. The latest tank destroyer of the German forces, the Jagdpanzer E100, turns into a huge slow-moving bunker on tracks - its armor is extremely thick and effective, and the weapon deals huge damage and penetrates opponents well. It is almost impossible to hide, but this is not necessary - just stand at an angle to the enemy and shoot him until he stops moving. However, you should be careful if the enemy is flanking you or shooting from below - the bottom surface of the Jagdpanzer E100 is not thick enough and can be penetrated even by medium-sized shells if fired correctly.

Its 37mm cannon makes the tank far from the most effective vehicle on the battlefield. It will be very difficult to hit anyone with this weapon, and if you take into account that they can throw it with some Soviet T-50, its fate becomes completely sad.

In general, the first tanks in the first sub-branch are quite passable, which cannot be said about the latest modification - Hetzer. This self-propelled gun will cause a lot of problems for the enemy, and many shells will bounce off its ricocheting forehead. She herself, possessing a 75 mm gun, will punish her opponents very often. It throws this AT hard, even towards the IS-2, which doesn’t care what angle its armor is at.

Second sub-branch

The selection of heavy tanks becomes truly heavy only starting with the legendary Tiger - Pz. Kpfw. VI Tiger Ausf. H1. And the Royal Tiger II modification has become a favorite tank, which is rolled out in regimental battles. Before the Tigers we will have to ride on medium tanks, which will please you with good armor-piercing and rate of fire. However, the ultimate goal is to reach the Tigers.

Third sub-branch

In the medium tank branch, the truly deadly tank will be the Pz. IV F2 with its powerful 75 mm gun, which is capable of hitting a Soviet KV from a distance of up to 1.5 km. In the same branch we will meet the legendary Panthers, which cause a lot of pain to the enemy. But you won’t be able to have fun with Panthers in battles with medium tanks - they are heavy and clumsy, they are heavy tanks after all.

Fourth sub-branch

In the anti-aircraft guns branch, Kugelblitz is of particular interest - it has become firmly established in the arsenal of regimental fighters. In direct hands, this anti-aircraft gun is capable of destroying both enemy aircraft and heavy royal Tigers. The rest of the anti-aircraft guns don’t stand out in anything special; they just do their job well – they destroy planes. Although it is also worth noting the Ostwind with its 37 mm gun. It can be used to destroy enemy anti-aircraft guns and disable tank modules and guns, which is useful to do when the enemy is occupied by an ally.

Fifth sub-branch

The tank branch is interesting as long as the tank destroyer has at least some mobility. But starting with the Panther Yak, the game turns into waiting for the first bomb from the plane. At the same time, such monsters as Ferdinand and Yak Tiger are priority targets for aviation. However, in simulator mode these PTs feel much better as long as there is no aviation there. But they are greatly annoyed by light and medium tanks, and the artillery they call in very often hits these giant vehicles.

If the first tank tanks are quite maneuverable and interesting to play on, then you can’t really drive the Yak Pantsir. In general, we chose a place for ourselves and sniper, changing our position if possible.

As for the branch to Maus, it will now look like this: Tiger (P) - new tank VK 100.01 (P) - Mäuschen - MAUS. The two hundred ton monster itself will also receive an upgrade that will allow it to fire and tank more effectively.

How Pz.Kpfw tanks. VII

At the moment, VK 72.01 is a Tier X super-heavy tank, which is awarded to players for impressive successes in battles on the Global Map. In terms of characteristics, the “lion slipper” is very similar to its pumpable brother, the E-100, but has a rear-mounted turret.

However, its speed significantly exceeds the E-100 - the “slipper” reaches 40 km/h. Among the disadvantages, the tank has rather weak side armor and a small ammunition load - 24 rounds.

The tank will change its name and become the crown of a new branch of German TT. Now Pz.Kpfw. VII will also receive a small app. The base armor penetration will increase to 246 mm, the DMP and accuracy will slightly increase, the ammunition load will also increase to 35 shells. But the most important thing is that the “lion slipper” will receive much more impressive frontal armor, which will allow it to fight off all calibers in the game.

Before we talk about the E-100 in our game, let's dig a little into history. The project to create a super-heavy E-series tank appeared among German designers in the early 40s of the 20th century, when the country was already waging a war against the USSR and the countries of the Allied bloc.

German designers planned to create a super-armored tank that could carry huge ammunition for long-term confrontation with enemy tanks.

However, Germany was never able to implement the E-series due to the enormous costs of combat operations and simply due to lack of time. In 1945, Germany was completely defeated, and the Panzerkampfwagen E-100 remained only in the drawings.

In World of Tanks, the E-100 is located at level X and a small upgrade awaits it in update 0.9.17.1. In general, nothing fundamentally new will happen to the tank, only the base armor penetration of the 15 cm gun will increase. It was 235 mm, but will become 246 mm. This upgrade will allow the E-100 to use expensive cumulative projectiles much less frequently.

Maus in the sandbox

German designers got excited about building an incredibly armored tank under the modest name Maus in 1942, when luck was still with the Wehrmacht forces.

The construction of the tank was undertaken by Ferdinard Porsche and by 1944 he had already presented Hitler with a couple of working options that had not yet received weapons. Hitler was forced to abandon further development, since the front required enormous funds.

In our game, Maus is located at Tier X and has the strongest armor among all TTs in the game. Of the poles, one can also note the largest margin of safety and good weapons.

The main disadvantage of the “mouse” has always been its very poor mobility, which makes the tank a tempting target for artillery.

In patch 0.9.17.1 Maus will receive the long-awaited upgrade. First of all, the DPM will increase significantly - if previously the basic reload of a gun reached almost 15 seconds, it will become less than 12 seconds, the accuracy and aiming time will also become much better. The stabilization of the gun will improve, but most importantly, the thickness of the frontal armor of the turret will become even thicker - 260 mm, whereas it was 240 mm. Now the “mouse” will take a hit much better and only the “gold” will be able to overcome the forehead of the tower.

Game on Panther II - 7 kills

As for the Panther II medium tank, the most important change in patch 0.9.17.1 will be the ability to install a fundamentally new gun, which will have the same average damage - 240 units, but with much better armor penetration - 223 mm. Also, the “panther” will be converted to HD, which will result in a change in its armor.

As it is not difficult to guess, the division into classes and levels builds “branches” of development, where the cherry on the cake is the “top” - a level 10 tank. The three first nations that have the most development branches are the USSR and Germany from the release, and the USA a little later. For three of us this is more than 20 tops, the rest are content with fewer branches.

In World of Tanks, each vehicle has its own playstyle. Conventionally, they can be divided into: tanks with armor and “cardboard” tanks without armor; small and “barn”; fast and slow; precise and oblique; rapid-fire and with a large alpha strike (damage per shot). Also, tanks can have traditional reloading and so-called drum loading, thanks to which you can fire several shells in a short time, but pay for it with a long reload.

Tanks with different playstyles place different demands on the player's skill. Thus, slow tanks with armor forgive the mistakes of their tankers, but a fast light tank or a cardboard medium tank painfully punishes for sloppy play. To understand which tanks should not be researched ahead of time, let’s try to divide all the vehicles in the game into appropriate categories by class. Let's start with heavy tanks.

Heavy tanks

If you came to World of Tanks to dominate the battlefield and crush everyone with your steel tracks, then heavy tanks are your choice. They combine strong armor, powerful guns and are capable of pushing through directions, “tanking” damage while less armored STVs come in from the flank and rear. But it's not that simple. There are TTs in WoT that do not fit the description above.

For example, the French AMX 50 100 and AMX 50b give a head start to many fast tanks in terms of dynamics and do not have armor. But they have a cannon with a drum for 6 and 4 shells, respectively. This is the choice of experienced players, they can show impressive results on these machines. Whereas a beginner who opens AMX 50 100 may become disappointed after playing several unsuccessful battles. And the whole point is that in the head of an inexperienced player there is a thought: “Hey, I have a fast tank, I need to go to that hill in the center and take it!” This usually leads to dire consequences.

Another good example of a branch not for beginners is the British top-end TT FV215b. The path to it is long and thorny - from level 5 to 7 you will have to ride almost the same Churchill with different guns and armor. At level 8, a deplorable Caernarvon awaits you compared to your classmates (don’t break your tongue!) with mediocre armor, dynamics and damage of 230 units per shot. And what does a player who opens a level 10 British TT get? And he gets the most comfortable gun among his heavy classmates, good turret armor and a slipper-like layout, which imposes its own difficulties on the game. Add to this the 76 mm NLD and two HUGE tanks immediately behind the armor, which leads to fires two to three times per battle. Then you will understand why beginners don’t like this tank so much. But, experienced players, despite all the disadvantages of the machine, use it in clan battles on the global map and are very happy with it.

The ideal option for mastering the TT class is the Soviet and German branches of the IS-7 and E 100. The IS-7 is a legend of the World of Tanks, the longed-for dream of any tanker. It has an impenetrable turret, good armor, a 130 mm cannon and the famous Soviet “vertukhan” (the ability to hit on the move and without aiming). E 100 is 130 tons of gloomy German genius. Has good armor and damage 750 units. If he is not standing in an open field, he is able to live for a long time and reflect a hail of shells that fly in his direction. On the way to both vehicles, you will have a pleasant game with such iconic tanks as the KV-1, IS, IS-3, T-10, Tiger, Tiger 2 and E 75.

Medium tanks

ST is a universal class in WoT. Favorite class of good players. They can inflict damage, deflect shells, carry out reconnaissance and illumination, carry out raids in the rear, return and disrupt the capture of a base, and some can do everything at once. Prominent representatives are the three twin brothers from the Soviet development tree - T-62A, Object 140 and Object 430. An inexperienced player will not see the difference in the performance characteristics of these vehicles, although there is a difference there.
